May be bold at that point of time but I couldn’t call him an extraordinary writer of intimate scenes. There are of course pages about sex and he has written it well. His final mumblings after getting drunk are the best two pages in the book. When Iqbal comes to preach them about their misgivings the villagers couldn’t understand his view point so he goes down as a failure. They try to shove innocent people to ground and these people too obey it without any questions because as far as they’ve known that’s the only way to live life. In fact according to them they are getting their salary even because of the English men so they aren’t the happier lots about the freedom.Įveryone with powers is corrupt in Mano majra, not by choice buy without any option because they don’t know what to do with their powers. They don’t understand even the meaning of freedom because they are not directly impacted by it. Far away in the village of Mano Majra people are happy to live their life and be content.

Both are as bad as each other.įor every one of us the year 1947 means happiness but that’s the only thing that went around at that time. At the end of the story there we could call no one the better out of two. The whole story is about Hindus and Muslims. When you have two sides fighting against each other it’s really tough to write an about them from an unbiased view point but here Khuswanth Singh has done that. Train to Pakistan shows how good a writer he is. Not the exact term but that’s the idea I got about him from the public. The ending of the book is the most touching part as it concludes by reminding the readers that No matter how cruel the world is, Love is always stronger than hate, and it can surpass the ravages of war.All I knew about Khushwant Singh before reading this book was that he’s a cult porn writer. It conveys lessons and experiences to the future generation as to how terrible and traumatic partition can be. The combination of the disturbing images with the narrative written by Khushwant Singh will make any reader emotional as it gives a close glance as to how people had to suffer. She captured the unfolding events and tragic scenes with her lens. The book also consists of rare photographs captured by Margaret Bourke-White, a photographer who was present in India during the partition. The book captures the struggles which the people had to face while heading to their respective nations leaving everything they owned behind. The land which was once their home became a foreign land overnight. Neighbours who were once considered as an extended family became enemies overnight.

The series of events that followed and its aftermath changed the dynamics of the village from harmony to acrimony. Later the village gets horrified when they receive a silent train laden with dead bodies. Iqbal, on the other hand, was a social worker who came from Delhi to inspire and motivate the localites to fight for the nation and engage themselves in political actions for the new India but gets falsely accused and lands up in jail. Jugga had a bad reputation and he was in love with the daughter of a Muslim weaver. The police then wrongly accused two people of the crime, Juggut ‘Jugga’ Singh and Iqbal Singh. The village had an equal majority of Muslims and Sikhs staying in harmony until one day the news of the murder of the local moneylender shocked the entire place.
